Uncle Johnnys

Uncle Johnny's Hostel is well established and right on the AT as you enter Erwin Tennessee. We stayed two nights as need to go to the outfitters in Johnson City to change out some gear. The first night we tented and the second stayed in a cabin. It was clear that "Sarg" wanted us to stay in a cabin both nights with comments like "A storm is due" (even though the weather report was clear) and "We cannot guarantee the safety of your tent/gear if you decide to tent". We had a mail drop at Johnny's and there was no issue collecting it. There is a soda machine but thats the extent of the snacks outside of trail food. The toilets were in a mess with plumbing materials spread across the sink counters, a big pile of trash outside the door on the deck and wet/dirty towels piled on the floor (none of these items moved in the three days we were there). But the water was hot and showers worked well. When we arrived we requested a shuttle into town to get some food as there was nothing at Johnny's. We was told its too late (approximately 5.05pm) so we decided to walk. About a mile down the road Sarg drove by with a female hiker who arrived after us in the vehicle. When I asked her later she told me she asked for a shuttle into town. The cabin was fine and although the TV only played some VHS videos which were in the room it worked (no channels just video). Use your sleeping bag as linens were not supplied. Uncle Johnny's Website
