White Mountain Lodge
Great place to recover from the Whites and rest before Mahoosuc Notch.
Situated right on the AT and just outside of Gorham this European style hostel was one of my favorites. It was clean, comfortable, relaxed and inviting. We received a free shuttle from Pinkham Notch to the hostel to stay the night. The hostel offers slack packing of the Catskills back to the hostel. When you arrive you go through a “decontamination” exercise in the garage, sounds weird but honestly it was well organized and benefited everyone entering the house. Packs and poles could be hung on hooks in the garage, boots were left by the packs. In a changing room there were fresh cloths of all sizes and types to allow you to change into clean clothes. If you didn’t have camp shoes then footwear was available. Dirty clothes were deposited in a laundry bin for processing by the hostel owners. You could then enter the building and make use of the big shower room, towels and soap provided.
The hostel can accommodate up to 20 people in five bedrooms. There are three rooms with private baths and two rooms sharing a double bath. The rooms were all redecorated and beds were new, some had bunk beds but there were also single beds available. The hostel supplied clean fresh bedding. The communal room had a varied DVD collection plus cable, wireless internet and computer and great cell signal if needed. Included in the price was a homemade cooked breakfast which was amazing. Guests could also use the kitchen to cook meals or there was also a grill available.
There were shuttles into town twice a day for resupply and to use local restaurants/post office.
The owner was a great host and her son completed a thru-hike of the AT the year before.
